Photogrammetry, what is that?

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted last. For that, I am going to share with you one of absolute investigations most valued technological innovations in our business – photogrammetry.

Absolute Investigations, Inc., is proud to be recognized as an innovative company, utilizing the upmost investigative technologies available in the industry. When snapshots and video footage are captured, our primary tool for analysis is photogrammetry.

Photogrammetry, what is that?

Photogrammetry is the science of analyzing dimension measurements from photographs, and converting the captured two-dimensional shots into three-dimensions. Photogrammetry has been around since the origin of photography; however, it wasn’t until the last few decades that the science really developed into an art and became a necessity for detectives.

Why is that a unique tactic to the investigational efforts?

Measurements can be captured and depicted in both film and digital cameras. Based on the field of view, focus, and the exposure of the photography, the snapshots that are captured can be used to reconstruct the image into a three-dimensional world.
Once photos are captured, triangulation comes into play – the mathematical process of formulating the intersecting and converging lines into 3D models, measurements, and point clouds. An investigator is able to analyze the various points of interests developed during the triangulation process to answer any outstanding questions and build supporting evidence for their case.

Absolute Investigations uses this technological method most during accident reconstruction; though, it can also assist in other areas such as criminal investigations, architecture, and topographic mapping, among many others. This technique is a specialty of Absolute Investigations, and we require our staff to undergo trainings to learn photogrammetry before heading out into the field.

One of our most recent cases entailed a hit and run. We were able to take enough images to determine the exact angle of impact between the two vehicles and recreate the accident as it occurred without depending on the bending truths from either parties.

Now, imagine going on a case without this technological convenience. The thought is unfathomable in our books!
